Ruth, Week 2: Unknown Fields
The story of Ruth is one of extreme circumstance and faithfulness, where through God’s mighty purpose, He uses a widowed woman in a foreign country to write His beautiful story of redeeming love through the birth, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
I try to put myself in Ruth’s shoes. What it would be like to be alone in a foreign country with my only family being my mother-in-law?
I love my mother-in-law dearly, she is one of my favorite people, and this is still a hard one to swallow.
Isolation. Discomfort. Brokenness. Heartache. Hopelessness. Fearfulness.
I can imagine that Ruth was feeling a multitude of those feelings.
Never do we see fear overtake Ruth. Instead, we see her have great devotion to Naomi and boldness to push forward through her circumstances.
Ruth went into the fields of Boaz and followed his servants. She picked through the barley stalks they had already gleaned through to find food for her and Naomi. When Boaz saw this, he could have killed her, for she had no right to be on his land and to be taking his grain. But he did not. Boaz showed Ruth favor.
He said, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband — how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.” (Ruth 2:11-12)
Ruth’s decision to be faithful to Naomi to the end shifted her life.
Ruth’s decision to be bold and go into the unknown fields to find food shifted her life.
Ruth chose God, faithfulness, and boldness instead of brokenness, hopelessness, and fear.
Ruth may not have known that each of these decisions was life altering, but to those of us looking into this story, we can see that each decision she made in faith was ordained by God.
Each decision that me make, each step of faith that we take, we may not understand. But how joyous will it be one day to look back at our lives and see how God intricately used each decision we made in faith to write our story and bring Him glory!
Friends, I want to encourage you to see that your life has a mighty purpose. You are not alone, and whatever the world has thrown at you that has caused you to feel helpless, you are not. You have a mighty God who loves you and cherishes your life. Each step you take, each decision you make in faith and obedience to God, He will use in glorious ways to further His Kingdom!
