Happy Summer, Y'all: Copper Tones

Linnea White

bonjouryall6_darling.jpg

Summer is officially here, y'all, and I'm beckoning in the hot days ahead with copper tones and top knots, short shorts and screen print tanks. And now that Summer is here, I'm fully embracing coppers, bronzes, brasses, and golds - the warm, sun-kissed hues of Summer. From new metallic shades of nail polish (coming soon to the shop!) to jewelry and accessories, this season, embrace the golden tones of Summer in all their glory. But don't forget your Coppertone (pun intended)!

Currently obsessed with... the list is long, darlings, especially because I'm loving the half-up top knot style with my newly chopped hair. Currently obsessed with the screen print tanks and totes by local artisan Dinosaur Toes at the shop, including this 'Bonjour Y'all' tank. I knotted it in the back for a cropped look with some high-waisted short shorts from Urban Outfitters. Also currently obsessed with the new jewelry from some of our other local artisan - Free Range and Feral and (brand new to the shop!) A Pocket Novel. Those delicate Japanese glass beaded bracelets are perfect for stacking (#armparty, anyone?). And don't even get me started on the new nail polish and lipstick colors from Kitsune's Closet - teaser alert! I personally requested this new fuchsia hue for Summer, coming soon to the shop in lipstick and nail polish.

Grab your sunnies and sunscreen, tanks and top knots, cuz Summer is officially here!

Coffee Date Style | How to Wear Spring Layers

Linnea White

MG_7081.jpg

When Spring doesn't look or feel like Spring, and the chilly days linger a little too long, don't let the weather steal your Spring vibes. Play with romantic layers and lacy textures this season to keep the ethereal magic of Spring alive. It's the ideal palette for rainy day coffee date style. For this rainy day Spring look, we visited one of our favorite spots on the mall - The Pie Chest. Not only are we pie addicts (I think I've tried just about every one), but we're also coffee addicts, and there's no place that makes us a better brew than Milli Coffee Roasters. The cute shop is the coziest getaway from the chilly rain, and a crisp backdrop for this outfit.

Romantic vibes are big this season, from the runway to the sale rack. And this lacy kimono is the perfect layering piece for those chilly Spring days, all while keeping that ethereal, romantic vibe. This flowy Maeve Anthropologie blouse in such a rich teal hue is a gorgeous compliment to the cream lace. And with rainy, 50 degree days in May (we can't even), these cutout suede booties are an easy addition to just about any Spring outfit. (Find some booties style inspiration here.)

This outfit is pretty much all about the accessories, though, featuring so many beautiful new arrivals from our local artisans in the shop. From the necklace to the earrings to the cuffs, the new pieces by Free Range & Feral is absolutely stunning in all its boho glory. And the leather handmade foldover clutch by Petaline is available in a variety of fabric/leather combinations. Not to be forgotten, the finishing touches on every outfit - locally made cosmetics by Kitsune’s Closet. Because what's a coffee date without the perfect lipstick stain on your mug?

Boho Spring Style: Easy Breezy

Linnea White

MG_0445_cropped-1.jpg

While last week was all about bright floral prints and the Spring color report, I was drawn to this beautiful black and white number for this week's Dressing Up outfit, so ethereal and enigmatic. The flowy boho Spring frock paired perfectly with our stunning new pieces by Dinosaur Toes and new Iced Coffee lipstick color by Kitsune's Closet.

With the 70's making a come back on the runways in the past year, there are plenty of reasons to embrace your inner boho this Spring and Summer. From crocheted looks to embroidered textures, flowy frocks and vibrant patterns, let your flower child out for a style spin. Dance in the warm Spring breeze, hair wild and free.

Rustic Fall Style in the Vineyard | Darling on the Trail

Linnea White

Darling is back on the trail – the Monticello Wine Trail, that is. This stop on the trail took us to the mountains for the gorgeous, 360 degree view at Afton Mountain Vineyards. Not only is Afton Mountain a scenic reprieve in the mountains, but it is also a vineyard that produces wine as robust and beautiful as the scenery. For our afternoon at Afton, we sipped on the Festa di Bacco, the "Super-Tuscan" red blend named after the original vineyard, Bacchanal Vineyards. This wine blended perfectly with our styled shoot, from hue to history, as we walked the grounds of a vineyard established in 1978. It was a bustling late afternoon at Afton, with wine club events and a lawn full of patrons sipping on wine in the evening sunlight. From the patio and lawn to the vines and even to the stunning water below, we explored this mountain-side winery, wine in hand.

Inspired by the autumnal scenery, we styled the models in colorful, fall-toned denim, cozy sweaters, and rich patterns with a boho-rustic feel. See how we styled the looks for a chilly Fall afternoon in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and shop these items and more at Darling Boutique, located on Charlottesville’s downtown mall!

The lovely Paige Pitstick was styled in a dreamy Free People sweater contrasted with a silky blouse, adding a warm plum to the sage green sweater. The Heidi braids and boho-inspired jewelry were the perfect compliment to the look.

On Paige: Free People sweater, $32 (sold) / Loft blouse, $18 / Joe's Jeans, $64 (sold) / Owl Ridge Farmstead antler collar necklace, $30, and sliced antler studs, $22 / Kitsune's Closet Mulberry Lipstick, $10 / Ugg clogs (model's own)

Shea Zwerver was styled in all the fireside goodies, from a chunky cardigan to easy booties, this colorful Fall look is ready for those evenings by the fire, Anthropologie catalog style.

On Shea: Loft stripe sweater, $20 (sold) / Philip Lim cardigan, $200 / AG Denim jeans, $64 (sold) / Joie boots, $96 (sold) / Owl Ridge Farmstead antler tip necklace, $50, leather knot studs, $22, and leather bracelet, $20 / Kitsune's Closet Noir Red Lipstick, $10 / Hat (model's own)

With her bob and overall adorable, retro personal style, styling Erin O'Hare in this Anthropologie sweater was a given. I started with the sweater and the oxford heels, and found the perfect olive, faux suede dress to pair with the look for a gorgeous autumnal look, with that vintage twist.

On Erin: Anthropologie Moth sweater jacket, $38 (sold) / Sienna Sky dress, $24 / Guess oxford heels, $30 / Pip's & Co. earrings, $10 / Kitsune's Closet Decco Red Lipstick, $10

After styling the other three models, I knew I wanted to styled an outfit that would compliment the fall hues and textures I'd chosen for their looks. I started with the patterned, flowy blouse, incorporating some of the colors in their outfits, and added layers for the perfect boho outfit ready for a stroll in the vines.

On Linnea: Anthropologie Angel of the North sweater, $34 (sold) / Umgee tunic blouse, $20 (sold) / Rag & Bone jeans, $88 / J. Crew boots, $96 / Owl Ridge Farmstead hammered brass bangles, $30, and smoky topaz empress necklace, $44 / Kitsune's Closet Mulberry Lipstick, $10

We loved our mountainside afternoon at Afton! I'm not sure how many references to The Sound of Music we made, but it was many. The rolling hills and rows upon rows of vines is truly a site to see.

How much more "the hills are alive with the sound of music" does it get than this?

See you on the trail, darlings!

Thank you to everyone who helped make this shoot possible, from our gorgeous friends/models, Sarah Craun of the Monticello Wine Trail, and Elizabeth Smith and the staff of Afton Mountain Vineyards!

Owl Ridge Farmstead | Our Darlings

Linnea White

When we met Maggie and Cody Sedelmeyer at Fleaville in July, we couldn't get over how cool they were - seriously. We were immediately drawn to their aesthetic - beautiful handcrafted boho, rustic goods - and their calm confidence in their products. We asked them that very day to come visit the shop and become one of our local artisans. The craftsmanship and authenticity of Owl Ridge Farmstead's products is the perfect pairing to our shop's aesthetic and mission. We've featured them in just a few shoots for the blog (here and here most recently), proving their pieces are versatile and easily styled. Last week, we restocked with more goodies by the Sedelmeyers, including handmade knit scarves in a variety of styles and colors. Come shop Owl Ridge Farmstead at Darling Boutique, and meet the duo in the Q&A below!

Q&A with Cody & Maggie Sedelmeyer

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? If not the Charlottesville area, what brought you here?

Cody and I (Maggie) are originally from North Carolina, and moved here about two years ago. We were drawn here by the beautiful farmland and the Blue Ridge Mountains. It was important for us to be able to raise our family in a place where they could explore and appreciate nature. Here in Sedalia, Virginia, we have begun to grow our family, our business, and our farm with the support of community.

As a local artisan, describe what you do in town.

Having learned a different aspects of our craft from family, we have continued to developed our skills over the past few years. Our goal is to create quality, handmade goods, using more natural materials. We strive to produce products that are fashionable and functional.

It's story time. Talk about your collaboration with Darling Boutique.

We were lucky enough to be located beside these two incredible ladies at Fleaville [in July]. It was our first experience in Charlottesville, and Darling Boutique made us feel quite welcome. It has been a wonderful experience, and such a blessing to be able to share our products with a new community and expand our relationship with fellow Virginians.

Describe Owl Ridge Farmstead in 10 words or less.

Using our farm and homestead as inspiration for our products.

Photo by Megan TiernanWhere do you go to be creative?

Most of our inspiration comes from the need or desire of a certain product in our everyday life. Creativity is inspired by doing farm chores, playing with our kids, or just walking through the fields. Anywhere your mind can stop running and start observing.

What aspects of life excite you, stir your affections, fuel your passions, inspire your art?

Living in a place where you can walk outside and see the shadowing outline of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is incredibly inspiring. It is so incredible to be able to watch our family learn from nature and creature everyday. There is so much beauty around us and it is a wonderful way to stay passionate and motivated to create.

When and why did you become an artisan? / How did you get into this business?

We started about five years ago, producing all natural soap. It was our way of connecting to our dream of a homestead, while working and living in the city. Once we finalized our move, we were allowed much more free time to work on other products and tune our skills.

What are you working on right now?

The biggest project right now is our knitwear line. It is always hard to strike the right balance and predict how much inventory will be needed, since it is such a limited season. However, I am really excited about the styles we have available this year. We will be incorporating two of my favorite mediums, leather and fiber.

Where can someone find your products (other than Darling Boutique)?
