Shop Girl Style: Evolving Style & Rotating Closet

Linnea White

When you get an amazing jacket for $4, your life changes forever. Okay, maybe not your WHOLE life, but for that moment, you're pretty proud of yourself. At least if you're a consignment shopper like this shop girl. Since becoming the owner of a consignment shop, my personal style has evolved - constantly and cyclically. My combined passion for sustainable fashion and affordable style breeds a healthy (I think) obsession with an evolving style & rotating closet kinda life.

Over the past year alone, my personal style has evolved, transformed, and, almost weekly, rotated. I dress by mood most days, and I go through phases with certain colors, silhouettes, or clothing items. I've also had a considerable body transformation over the past two years that's allowed me to really sweep my closet of ill-fitting garments I no longer want to wear or can't wear anymore.

Through my style evolution, one thing is a constant - and that's comfort. I have to be comfortable at the shop, working long 8-10 hour days, and on my feet most of the time. That's where my Lotta's come in. This ain't no sponsored post. This is the real deal love for an item of clothing that changed your life, and that's my clogs. Two years ago when I bought the store, I bought two pairs of Lotta clogs, and they have been my staple shop girl shoe. Who knew a wooden clog could be so comfortable?!

But comfort doesn't mean sacrificing style, and I swear my hair transformation this year has emboldened me to be more eclectic than I think I've ever been. Learning to be smart with proportions and color palettes, textures and patterns, has been an adventure for me. And I hope to keep improving and learning so I can become the stylist I dream of being not just for myself, but for all the darlings out there.

Spring Break Ready: Vacation Essentials

Linnea White

Ignore the flurries that were spotted in Charlottesville today, you Spring Breakers. Get Spring Break ready for that tropical weather with these vacation essentials. Head South, to the land of dragon flies and saltwater breezes.

Just last week, when the temperatures were in the seventies, we took to the streets of Downtown Cville in an outfit ready for Spring Break. This outfit shoot may have taken place in the streets, but it's ready for the BEACH. Palm trees, plz.

These dragonfly pattern shorts by Daughters of the Liberation (Anthropologie) have been calling my name since they came into the shop, and I loved contrasting their girlishness with a boho crochet, fringe hem crop sweater (also by Anthropologie) and Free People bralette underneath. Because showing your bra is all the rage this season. Good thing we just got a few super cute Free People bralettes in the shop, huh?

To play up the tropical, Spring Break vibes, I added a pair of mirrored colorful sunnies and these strappy Jeffrey Campbell block heels. Don't forget your throw-all tote bag for all your adventures and souvenirs, especially a locally made, screen printed "Nasty Woman" tote bag. And, of course, don't forget the simple statement accessories that are easy to pack and can be worn with everything, like this new choker necklace by Free Range and Feral and a few everyday stacking rings by Thicket - locally made, of course.

And since vacation packing means versatility, a jean jacket is the perfect layering piece for any temps. This one my Pilcro & The Letterpress is SO cute and comfortable.

What are your Spring break/vacation essentials?

Darling, You've Got Style: The Crop Top

Linnea White

FullSizeRender-2.jpg

I'm obsessed with crop tops and high waisted bottoms this year. So obsessed I'm finding ways to tie up tops that aren't crop tops to make them crops tops so I can wear them over pretty much anything. My obsession has at least taught me how women of all shapes and sizes can wear a crop top to flatter their figure. The key: accentuate your smallest part - your natural waist - and know how to work proportions on the bottom for your body type.

croptopoutfit

Here are a few style tips to show how you can wear crop tops, no matter what body type you have.

Hourglass

This body type is crop top gold. Try shorter crop tops and mid-rise bottoms to show off your small waist. Keep the top fitted, and play up your curves with fuller shapes on the bottom.

Curvy

From top and bottom curves to pear-shaped ladies, those with curves can and should learn the magic of the right proportions for a crop top. Make sure the top hits at the vertical center of your ribcage for ample waist definition and pair it with a fitted bottom, i.e. the pencil skirt.

Plus-Size

Ladies of all shapes and sizes can rock a crop top. It's true! Knowing fit and proportion is key. Maximize proportions by pairing a fitted crop top (especially with long-sleeves) with a full bottom (especially a midi skirt).

Petite

Small frames are ideal for voluminous crop tops - think boxy cuts, structured shoulders, bold shapes, interesting hemlines. Just remember to pair the volume on top with a sleek, ideally high-waisted, bottom, like a pencil skirt or long pants, giving you the appearance of looking much taller.

Tall and Slender

Tall, slender gals should choose a crop top that falls at your natural waist and wear a waistline that hits slightly below - leaving a few inches of mid-drift exposed, perfectly highlighting your thin frame. Think Taylor Swift. (Duh.)

Athletic

Fit, athletic builds benefit from a sporty look that allows for ample ab-show-off-ing. Think sports bra length crop tops with a loose-fitting bottom. Just keep it classy, ladies.

Dressing Up with Darling: Transitions

Linnea White

darlingtransitions_st_backup2.jpg

I'm so excited to officially welcome the Dressing Up series on the Darling blog! Over a year and a half ago, in October 2013, the Dressing Up series came to life. It started as a small collaboration with Elizabeth Steel, former owner of Darling, and editor of the blog Cville Niche, Linnea White. Over the past year, it grew into a collaboration with five local boutiques!

This feature ushers in a new chapter for the Dressing Up series, and for yours truly. As one of the new co-owners of Darling, I am transitioning my fashion blogging from Cville Niche over to the Darling Blog. I couldn’t have imagined back in 2013 where my passion for playing dress up would be headed, or how much I would grow to love fashion blogging. So here we are in 2015 with a new fashion adventure!

Transitions and New Beginnings

In the spirit of transitions and new beginnings - from Winter to Spring, from one blog to another - I styled a fun, spirited outfit, complete with boots made for romping around and playful accessories. And since The Lone Bellow is coming into town Saturday night, I naturally channeled band member Kaneen's flawless boho style and frolicked over to The Jefferson for our backdrop.

From the Frye boots to the lace skirt, the gemstone necklace or beaded bracelet, find all of these great items at Darling Boutique! The jewelry featured in this outfit is brand new jewelry - the shipment came in the same day as the shoot, and we were so excited to be able to feature the new items.

So stop by and shop the new and consigned items in the store to get your Spring style blossoming!
