Velvet for the Holidays

Linnea White

Velvet for the Holidays. Is there a better combination? Not this season! Velvet is everywhere, and it's a guaranteed stunner for all your Holiday fêtes ahead.  Velvet has made a huge comeback this year, and we're loving it. The fabric has a rich, luxe feel, and an effortless sheen, making it perfect for the Holidays. This black velvet Free People dress was the perfect fit for an understated Holiday look. We even paired it with some high top sneakers for an unexpected twist.

The velvet luster is also a great backdrop for local artisan Lisa Christine Jewelry's lovely creations - from a moon ring to a crystal necklace to silver hoop earrings. The trick to velvet is to let it do most of the talking, or find accent pieces - like statement jewels - to ramp it up a notch without going kitschy.

How do you like to wear the velvet trend, darlings? Tell us in the comments!

P.S. This is our adorable #darlingintern, Jillian! She's a senior at Monticello High School, and she has been a HUGE help around the shop this Fall so far. We'll introduce her on the blog with a little Q&A soon!

How to Wear Booties in the Summer: Cool Kid Status

Linnea White

I call this The Wall Flower OOTD. Cuz it's literally floral and on a wall. But it's also what I'd imagine a super cool wall flower would look like. And this OOTD also teaches you how to wear booties in the Summer.

This outfit is really all about the 'tude. A pair of floral Free People shorts and this stunning cream blouse by Anthropologie could look so feminine and delicate. But I didn't want to style them that way. Cuz what's the fun in doing what's expected (especially with style)? Instead, I took what look like delicate pieces, and styled them for the bad girl - The Wall Flower. The circle sunnies and stacking chokers and Aztec earring jackets give this look a rocker vibe, taking it from sweet to sassy.

And what's really important is how to wear your favorite booties in the Summer. Just because it's hot outside doesn't mean you can't rock a pair of booties! Especially with the right outfit! Booties look great with shorts from romping around in the Summer, and they especially can give a sundress a totally different vibe than all those sandals and wedges you've been wearing. Try it out. Just make sure you wear a good pair of sweat-wicking socks. You'll be glad you did.

Spring Break Ready: Vacation Essentials

Linnea White

Ignore the flurries that were spotted in Charlottesville today, you Spring Breakers. Get Spring Break ready for that tropical weather with these vacation essentials. Head South, to the land of dragon flies and saltwater breezes.

Just last week, when the temperatures were in the seventies, we took to the streets of Downtown Cville in an outfit ready for Spring Break. This outfit shoot may have taken place in the streets, but it's ready for the BEACH. Palm trees, plz.

These dragonfly pattern shorts by Daughters of the Liberation (Anthropologie) have been calling my name since they came into the shop, and I loved contrasting their girlishness with a boho crochet, fringe hem crop sweater (also by Anthropologie) and Free People bralette underneath. Because showing your bra is all the rage this season. Good thing we just got a few super cute Free People bralettes in the shop, huh?

To play up the tropical, Spring Break vibes, I added a pair of mirrored colorful sunnies and these strappy Jeffrey Campbell block heels. Don't forget your throw-all tote bag for all your adventures and souvenirs, especially a locally made, screen printed "Nasty Woman" tote bag. And, of course, don't forget the simple statement accessories that are easy to pack and can be worn with everything, like this new choker necklace by Free Range and Feral and a few everyday stacking rings by Thicket - locally made, of course.

And since vacation packing means versatility, a jean jacket is the perfect layering piece for any temps. This one my Pilcro & The Letterpress is SO cute and comfortable.

What are your Spring break/vacation essentials?

Black and White: The Overalls Trend

Linnea White

It's everywhere this season - the overalls trend. Not everyone was as cool as me, struttin' around in their Oshkosh overalls back in 93', so in case you missed out on the overalls thing as a kid, don't worry - they're adult friendly now.

I have to admit - I love overalls. The right pair for the right person are for sure adorable. I scored a vintage Levi's pair last Fall at the shop that gave me LIFE, and I can't wait to wear them all Spring long. Sadly, this black vegan leather pair by Free People sold the day I put them on the floor, which just speaks to how hot this trend really is right now. (Don't worry, another pair of Levi's overalls came in this week, size 0, so all you skinny girls, get in here to snag 'em before they're gone.)

Another trend you'll see this season is the come back of a classic black and white ensemble. From color blocking to pattern play, I'm so excited to see this simple, chic look make a statement this season. For an LA/West Coast vibe, I paired these overalls with a relaxed white T-shirt (and my freaking amazing new Frye snakeskin booties) for an outfit that is all play, no work. Add a pair of oversized Lennon sunglasses and understated, crip accessories, all locally made, of course. Can't get enough of the amazing stacking rings by Thicket Jewelry at only $12 a pop, and her new bar studs, too.

What do you think of the overalls trend, darling? How would you rock it?

The Moto Jacket: How to Wear Blush Pink

Linnea White

It's Valentine's weekend, and this outfit has me blushing in blush pink. The duality of this flirty, feminine look lies in the moto jacket - adding a touch of edge to an otherwise sweet outfit, while also softening the black base with a soft, pale pink hue. It's sugar and spice, and everything nice.

Working the Moto Jacket

I've been waiting for an outfit that would let me work that "editor drape" with a structured jacket for a laidback-chic look. And this moto jacket from Loft was the perfect piece to pull it off. I love how the architecture of the jacket plays with the soft velvet and suede bottoms, and textured knit of the strapless Free People top. Soft and tough playing together in an effortless way (especially with those soft curls!).

This outfit has me blushing from more than just the fabric. Working with Tristan Williams for the blog has been a treat, and this shoot wow-ed me. This guy is a mega talented photographer, and after my recent hair makeover, I was stunned at how he captured the new hair, the outfit, the whole essence of the look. Props to Tristan, y'all.

How to Wear Blush Pink this Spring

Blush pink has me all sorts of excited for Spring. Blush is a sophisticated, endearing, elegant shade of pink, which normally isn't a color I'm drawn to. And don't be fooled - whether you have the skin tone or the right hair color to pair with blush hues, you can wear it, and work it. How can you wear blush pink, you ask? Take a note from this outfit for a few key tips to wearing blush hues this Spring.

  • Pair it with colors that flatter your skin tone. Blush pink may not be one of your colors, but it certainly pairs with a lot of other colors. Try it with navy, black, chocolate, olive green, charcoal grey, oxblood, teal, plum, or even deep lavender - rich tones to balance out the muted, washed out tone of blush. Warm or cool colors pair well with this accent color.
  • Anchor it. Keep blush rooted in your outfit to avoid the washed out, light qualities. Pairing it with dark colors is a way to anchor it, and so it wearing a blush piece (like this jacket) with an elongating base (like these black leggings).
  • Accessorize like a lady. If wearing a blush top or piece next to your face won't do with your skin tone, try adding it to your look with accent pieces - bags, shoes, belts, etc. It makes for a stunning leather accessory, neutral in its shade and easily workable into many outfits.
