Mother-Daughter Style for Mother's Day

Linnea White

"Empowered women empower women." I am deeply passionate about this - it is a mantra in my life, for my shop, for how I see and interact with other women. And it's also an anthem for Mother's Day. Because who taught us more about confidence, beauty, grace, style, and passion than our very own momma? And today, it's all about loving on my momma in this special Mother-Daughter style post, featuring my gorgeous momma.

Behind the Mother-Daughter Style

I'm not gonna lie. She didn't want to do this. Unlike her ENFP youngest daughter who rather enjoys style shoots and being in front of the camera (that would be me), she is not someone who enjoys being in front of the camera. But I made her do it. I guess pouting still works, even at 28!

Styling my mom for this shoot was my first priority, and I had so much fun doing it. I wanted her to feel beautiful in what she was wearing, and comfortable in it, too.

My mom is Super Mom. She homeschooled all four of us kids growing up, while working part-time. Once we were either out of the nest or in high school, she went into education and began a career working for Special Education Pre-School students in Virginia Beach City Schools. (Like I said, she's Super Mom.) She's also been an avid runner, something she picked up because her children drove her out the door and onto the streets with pitchforks. Just kidding. But she did start running after starting a family (a.k.a. having multiple children) for some much needed private time. And now, several Boston Marathons later, she's the freaking Energizer Bunny. I have a dream to run a marathon with my mom one day...

But I'll keep dreaming for now, and get back to the styling!

I styled her outfit first, since she was really what it was all about. Then I worked on finding an outfit that would compliment her own. And these dresses ended up pairing perfectly together, anchored together with navy, and both shifty in style. And I loved finding jewelry she would love, and that naturally already went with her style (like those amazing bracelets she's been wearing for as long as I can remember).

I was so happy she loved her outfit - so much so that she bought the dress, boots, and necklace! I'd say that was some successful styling.

I Love You, Mom

Mom, it was an honor to style you. Thanks for getting in front of the camera with me. Thank you for supporting me endlessly, loving me deeply and honestly, and for always, always being there for me - for a long talk on the phone, for a prayer request, for a good cry, for a good belly laugh, for a good glass of wine, for a home-baked sweet-tooth fix. You'll always be Super Mom in my eyes. Happy Mother's Day!

How does your mom inspire & empower you, darling?

Dressing Up with Cville Blooms

Linnea White

Last Spring, we interviewed Della Bennett to talk all about how cville BLOOMS got started and her personal style. And this time, to promote the upcoming pop-up shop on 1st Street on Sunday, April 2, we styled Della in two outfits to showcase what a rockstar lady boss she is - day to night. From creating the beautiful arrangements and making deliveries, to attending events in all her lady boss glam, this darling gal is as seriously adorbs as she is seriously cool.

Blooming stories dipped in green topped with those positive V I B E S.

That's how Della described her business in 10 words or less in her interview with us last Spring, and it's still the perfect way to describe the floral arrangements she creates for cville BLOOMS. And this Sunday, for the 1st Street Block Party, you'll get to shop all of her grab-n-go floral arrangements and a wide selection of house plants! Because it's Spring and you need a little green in your (home) life.

Day Della: Fierce Florist Fashion

Daytime Della. Sounds like a super hero. With overalls as her super hero outfit, and scissors as her weapon of choice. Flower Power. It's a thing. And Della is the queen of it.

Night Della: Girl Gets Glam

Nighttime Della sure can get glam. This dress is a little bit retro, a little bit funky (that print!), and a lot a bit spunky. Playing up the '50s vibes of this dress, we threw on some cat eye sunglasses and a vintage snap closure leather handmade clutch. And to modernize the look a bit, like you want to with any vintage-inspired outfit, Della rocked a pair of handmade tassel earrings and her own #darlingfinds - a pair of black booties from last year.

Black and White: The Overalls Trend

Linnea White

It's everywhere this season - the overalls trend. Not everyone was as cool as me, struttin' around in their Oshkosh overalls back in 93', so in case you missed out on the overalls thing as a kid, don't worry - they're adult friendly now.

I have to admit - I love overalls. The right pair for the right person are for sure adorable. I scored a vintage Levi's pair last Fall at the shop that gave me LIFE, and I can't wait to wear them all Spring long. Sadly, this black vegan leather pair by Free People sold the day I put them on the floor, which just speaks to how hot this trend really is right now. (Don't worry, another pair of Levi's overalls came in this week, size 0, so all you skinny girls, get in here to snag 'em before they're gone.)

Another trend you'll see this season is the come back of a classic black and white ensemble. From color blocking to pattern play, I'm so excited to see this simple, chic look make a statement this season. For an LA/West Coast vibe, I paired these overalls with a relaxed white T-shirt (and my freaking amazing new Frye snakeskin booties) for an outfit that is all play, no work. Add a pair of oversized Lennon sunglasses and understated, crip accessories, all locally made, of course. Can't get enough of the amazing stacking rings by Thicket Jewelry at only $12 a pop, and her new bar studs, too.

What do you think of the overalls trend, darling? How would you rock it?

The Moto Jacket: How to Wear Blush Pink

Linnea White

It's Valentine's weekend, and this outfit has me blushing in blush pink. The duality of this flirty, feminine look lies in the moto jacket - adding a touch of edge to an otherwise sweet outfit, while also softening the black base with a soft, pale pink hue. It's sugar and spice, and everything nice.

Working the Moto Jacket

I've been waiting for an outfit that would let me work that "editor drape" with a structured jacket for a laidback-chic look. And this moto jacket from Loft was the perfect piece to pull it off. I love how the architecture of the jacket plays with the soft velvet and suede bottoms, and textured knit of the strapless Free People top. Soft and tough playing together in an effortless way (especially with those soft curls!).

This outfit has me blushing from more than just the fabric. Working with Tristan Williams for the blog has been a treat, and this shoot wow-ed me. This guy is a mega talented photographer, and after my recent hair makeover, I was stunned at how he captured the new hair, the outfit, the whole essence of the look. Props to Tristan, y'all.

How to Wear Blush Pink this Spring

Blush pink has me all sorts of excited for Spring. Blush is a sophisticated, endearing, elegant shade of pink, which normally isn't a color I'm drawn to. And don't be fooled - whether you have the skin tone or the right hair color to pair with blush hues, you can wear it, and work it. How can you wear blush pink, you ask? Take a note from this outfit for a few key tips to wearing blush hues this Spring.

  • Pair it with colors that flatter your skin tone. Blush pink may not be one of your colors, but it certainly pairs with a lot of other colors. Try it with navy, black, chocolate, olive green, charcoal grey, oxblood, teal, plum, or even deep lavender - rich tones to balance out the muted, washed out tone of blush. Warm or cool colors pair well with this accent color.
  • Anchor it. Keep blush rooted in your outfit to avoid the washed out, light qualities. Pairing it with dark colors is a way to anchor it, and so it wearing a blush piece (like this jacket) with an elongating base (like these black leggings).
  • Accessorize like a lady. If wearing a blush top or piece next to your face won't do with your skin tone, try adding it to your look with accent pieces - bags, shoes, belts, etc. It makes for a stunning leather accessory, neutral in its shade and easily workable into many outfits.

Winter Layering: Sweater Weather, Part 3

Linnea White

Sometimes a woman's best friend is the softest, coziest, and warmest sweater in her closet. And this chunky knit number is oh-so-perfect for all the Winter layering needs. When a bunch of amazing Free People comes into the shop in one week, I tend to get a little giddy. With an assortment of Winter hats, sweaters, dresses, and tops, it was time to play dress up.

This embroidered short crop Free People sweater is even more stunning in person, with vibrant colors and a dolphin cut hem. For warmth, I layered it with a long, flowy, chunky open sweater for a little proportion play. The extra long sleeves on this sweater gives me life - literally, because it keeps the blood flowing in my fingers, which are always cold in the Winter.

I kept the bottom of this look monotone, pairing neutrals like this taupe pair of Level 99 jeans and Frye Engineer boots. Add a pink lip for a color pop (locally made by Kitsune's Closet, of course) and top it all off with a slouchy beanie for the perfect casual Winter layering style.

How do you like to layer during the Winter months? Get more inspiration from this Sweater Weather series here and here.
