The Be Free Series Continues: Week 5 | Kindness

Yesterday my husband, Scott and I watched the movie Enchanted. If you haven’t seen this movie, I recommend it for a light-hearted laugh. Gizelle is a story book princess who finds herself no longer in her fairytale land (literally) and is wandering the streets of NYC, a true damsel in distress. While this character is highly exaggerated there are a few characteristics of her nature that model the kindness that we should strive to have inside us.

When there were people who treated her poorly, she didn’t harbor bitterness - she showed them kindness. When someone was rude to her, she always thought the best of the other person. She went out of her way to help her friends and put their needs above her own. Indeed, we are not fairytale characters and life has greater complexity than black and white. However, when it comes to the outward kindness that we give to one another, it stems from the way we see Jesus.

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:31-32

When we truly understand the forgiveness that we have received from the cross, the meaning of forgiveness has a whole new perspective. We can then treat each other with a genuine, pure, kindness that will overflow from our hearts.

In Luke 5, there is a story about a paralyzed man who was eager to meet Jesus and be healed by him. His friends couldn’t find room for him inside the house where Jesus was teaching. They had such kindness, love, and compassion toward their friend that they lowered him into the house through the roof to meet Jesus! This perfectly exemplifies how we are to treat one another in kindness. Not only did Jesus heal the paralyzed man, but he also healed the sins of his friends because of their faith.

IMG_0144I encourage you when you are wronged to not harbor bitterness but instead show them kindness.

I encourage you to clothe yourself in compassion and kindness.

I encourage you to think the best of others.

I challenge you to go out of your way to show kindness to one friend this week.

“Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Colossians 3:12

Be blessed my friends, Meg

My hope and prayer for this devotional series is to have each of us grow together and grow in our relationship with Jesus. May we gain a better understanding of our identity in Him. I have been seeking His voice and guidance on where to start this devotional and I believe that this is the best place to start – this “Be Free” series. It will take us each one step closer to being truly free in Jesus. There is no freedom apart from Christ Jesus, who died for our sins, and once we experience that freedom, we can truly live.

Each week during this series we will soak in His truth and apply it to our daily life – one fruit of the Spirit at a time.
