Utilitarian Chic: On Trend Meets Timeless Fashion

Linnea White

One of the Spring 2017 fashion trends to look out for, utilitarian chic is a play on tailored classics and sporty proportions. For a little #throwbackthursday fashion, I styled a timeless-meets-trendy outfit that had me channeling my inner Marilyn or Audrey in these sunnies.

This outfit is such a throw back (#TBT), I can't even handle. I felt like a mid-century babe in this outfit, from the coiffed curls to the utilitarian pencil skirt and feminine blouse. Like a bird on a wire, I felt airy and dainty, spreading my wings, strolling on my tippy toes; and like a total bad ass babe, I felt bossy and confident, rocking those shades like there was paparazzi around the corner.

Even the makeup plays up the updated 1950's style, from the hair style to the bold brow and bright lipstick, taking this trend from sporty to feminine, functional to fashionable. I opted for the Be Smoaked fuchsia lipstick, locally made by Kitsune’s Closet, as a subtle nod to Miss Felicity Smoake (Arrow fans, anyone??), another blonde bombshell. And how fun is the subtle lilac hue to the new hair in this look? I can't get enough of this darling makeover.

Keys to Wearing the Utilitarian Chic Trend

The utilitarian chic trend is incredibly versatile, and so easy to personalize to your style. From urban street to workwear chic, this trend is something any gal can pull off.

Here are a few key tips to keep in mind when wearing the utilitarian chic trend:

  • Balance oversized proportions with tailored pieces. Complement a sporty, masculine piece with a feminine, straight silhouette, like a pencil skirt or shift dress, or a lighter, airy fabric.
  • Embrace girly accents, like delicate jewelry or French-knotted scarves.
  • Pick pieces in dark, muted tones - military green, olive green, khaki, black, grey, white, brown, navy. Play with prints and solids, interplaying subtle details for a cohesive look.
  • Try a jumpsuit!
  • When in doubt: wear a white shirt. From a basic tee to a button up blouse, the white shirt is a simple way to play with this trend, pairing it with a simple skirt or pants, a parka or jacket, and a silk scarf (for a start!).
  • Finishing touches are important, so choose footwear that completes the look. For a more utilitarian, sporty look, go with heavy boots or sneakers. For a more chic, feminine look, opt for a shoe with a heel or sleek silhouette.

How do you rock the utilitarian chic trend, darling?

Valentine's Day Outfit: Pink vs. Red

Linnea White

vdaycollage.jpg

It's Valentine's Day, darlings, and that means it's time for an epic battle of love (right?). We styled two Valentine's Day outfits for two kinds of gals - the Lady in Red or Pretty in Pink (a.k.a. 80's Barbie). From sugar to spice, we've got that last minute VDay outfit inspiration you need.

P.S. I went a little crazy with a lavender hair toner to see what would happen, and had a little temporary lilac hue going when we did this shoot! This hair makeover is giving me LIFE these days. Once you go platinum white, you never go back... right?

Pretty in Pink

I felt like a cupcake in this dress - in the best way possible. All the girly vibes had me ready for an 80's themed VDay party. I added my vegan leather jacket to edge up the look a bit, and a pair of new sunnies for that extra touch of glam. Don't forget a locally made lipstick in hot pink!

Lady in Red

Silk = sexy. This silk DVF dress is SO va-va-voom, I was swooning as soon as it touched my skin. For the spicier gal, this dress is made to show off some curves, and light up the room in the crisp red hue. With a dress this sexy, keep the accessories simple and understated. I opted for a pair of tassel earrings by Pan&Tea, a classic (locally made) red lipstick, and a side swept 'do to add a touch of elegance. And just because, threw my Anthropologie leather jacket over my shoulders again for that finishing statement piece.

Style that Speaks: Love is a Verb

Linnea White

A week from today is the Day of Love - Valentine's Day. And instead of getting all dolled up in pink and red to promote the holiday, I'm dressing in style that speaks. Spread the L O V E with Darling this Valentine's Day by shopping during a special fundraiser event benefitting the International Rescue Committee right here in Charlottesville.

"Love one another, as I have loved you." John 13:34

"In the age of ISIS, terrorism and radical ideology, in many cases, fear of people we don’t know has replaced a duty to help them."

"The story of the Good Samaritan is a reminder that love, not political ideology, should guide our actions."

A few weeks ago, in the middle of January, I was thinking about Valentine's Day, and what I wanted to plan for the shop - A sale? A special pop up event? Some sort of collaboration? What about a fundraiser for a local charity? Immediately, the IRC came to mind. Before the recent travel ban, before the polarizing debates about how we should treat other human beings, my heart knew where the love needed to go. And I'm honored to be able to spread love in this community through my little shop.

Love One Another

Who is my neighbor? Are we not called to love? What does the Bible say about how we should treat the foreigner, the stranger, the refugee?

Last year, the Syrian refugee crisis ravaged the Middle East, the world, and my heart - and it is ongoing. In the past year, I've prayed with the wordless groans of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:26) about the refugees of the world - so many displaced right here in our city. I have felt helpless and weak, but the intercession of God's heart for His people has been steadfast in my spirit.

This is not a political statement. This is not a vein attempt at publicity. This is hope. This is a step out in to today's world, in to our very present time of need, walking on the simple, timeless wisdom of the Bible. I will love my neighbors, I will help those in need and defend the powerless. Let's combat the fear with a whole lot of love. For there is no darkness in light, no fear in love. Let's rise up, brothers and sisters. Let's reach out.

Style that Speaks: Love

Last Fall, the safety pin became a symbol of inclusivity, of support and protection for the vulnerable, the powerless. It showed compassion and hope. When this safety pin pattern French Connection dress came in to the shop, I immediately thought of that message, that hope, and had already begun plans for this fundraiser. I love that the pattern on the dress is a string of safety pins joined together - united. I knew it was the perfect way to demonstrate style that speaks. I made a sign and hit the Downtown Mall, ready to start spreading the love.

It's a challenge, a daily prayer to see beyond oneself, to see others with a heart of love, not of fear, and to serve others humbly and justly. I pray that you'll join me in this daily effort to love more, and speak louder - with your actions, your words, your signs, your clothes - you name it. Love is the movement. Love is a verb.
