Memorial Day Style | Summer Sundress

Linnea White

memorialday10_darling.jpg

The temperatures are rising, the sun is shining, and the large bodies of water are calling. It's sundress season, and we're sporting some red, white, and blue for some Memorial Day style.

With a huge selection in stock, the perfect Summer sundress is waiting for you at Darling, and this new number by Roxy had us craving some oceanside hangs. With a subtle nod to nautical design, this dress is perfect for all of the Memorial Day festivities. Tie a little white blouse (linen or cotton for those hotter days) at the narrowest part of your waist to draw in the otherwise voluminous skirt on this number.

Playing with the nautical theme, this straw tote bag and gold sandals got us beach-ready. These nautical button studs by local artisan Pip's & Co are a simple addition to the look. And, of course, we had to feature the vibrant new lip and nail polish colors by Kitsune's Closet, made right here in Charlottesville. That Fiesta Red lipstick is our new favorite for Summer, and this Tomato nail polish is seriously rich in pigment and sass.

While this outfit has us ready to hit the pool, lake, or beach, we want to know: where are you headed to this Memorial Day Weekend to kick off Summer in style?

Who said you can't wear white before Memorial Day? When it comes to style, rules are made for breaking. Because right now, the little white dress is making a serious statement, and it's giving us all the Summer feels - although, I'm game for the White-Out look year-round. If you're not sure how to rock the all white ensemble, the perfect place to start is a little white dress --- Pure Summer Ease. This Madewell dress is the perfect white dress for warmer days ahead. Airy, white linen, with a touch of cream embroidery and a loose fit, it's as comfortable as it is stylish. Spring Layers to the Max(i)

Linnea White

MG_6384.jpg

On days like today, it's all a girl can do to wear clever Spring layers. Early Spring in Virginia can be a tricky transitional season to dress for, and that's where smart layering comes in.

Once again, this look started with a statement piece - this maxi skirt from Anthropologie. From the pattern to the tassel ties, this skirt is a beauty. The J. Crew anorak jacket was next, dressing down the skirt and giving the look a layer for the chilly Spring temperatures. For a pop of color, this J. Crew tank top paired perfectly with one of the newest lip colors from Kitsune's Closet, Fiesta, a bright orangey-red perfect for the warmer weather ahead. Add some simple accessories by Dinosaur Toes and this classic Madewell leather bag for a look ready for any Spring day.

Meet cville BLOOMS | Our Darlings

Linnea White

cville blooms pop up shopWhen we think of the words "babe vibes," we think of an arrangement by cville BLOOMS. And lately, we've been crushing hard on the blooms by the babe Della Bennett. From succulents to billy balls, bouquets large and small, her blooms have been filling the shop with Spring cheer.

This weekend, get your cville BLOOMS floral fix! From the Charlottesville City Market to FleaVILLE at Lee Park, as you make your way down 1st street, stop by Darling for a special pop up shop with cville BLOOMS! Featuring fresh Grab & Go flowers AND a terrarium bar from 10-2, or while supplies last.

In the meantime, meet the babe behind the blooms.

Q&A with Della Bennett

Tell us a little about yourself. Where are you from? If not the Charlottesville area, what brought you here?

I was born & raised out in rural Fluvanna County. It was there that I developed a deep relationship with nature and all of its beauty - particularly flowers and plants. My mom & dad have been gardening since before I was born and continue to make their home a lush & inspiring environment. I moved away for college and then headed down to Charleston, SC where I continued to be inspired by the local beauty ... and let's be honest, goof off on the beach for a bit. Then right back to Charlottesville a few years later to get real and grow a business!

As a local artisan, describe what you do in town.

I own cville BLOOMS - a local floral & plant design company. I offer custom flower arrangements, live gifts, hands-on workshops, and full wedding & event floral services. I love doing pop-up workshops all over Charlottesville and connecting with other creatives & business owners.

Describe cville BLOOMS in 10 words or less.

Blooming stories dipped in green topped with those positive V I B E S

It's story time. Talk about your collaboration with Darling Boutique.

We've been in a loving Instagram relationship for a while now. They reached out to me about doing something fun for their birthday event and I accepted, of course! I made a big bright beautiful flower arrangement for them and some cute little succulent favors for them to pass out to their favorite supporters. Next up, we're going to create a pop-up spring flower shop, and plan some workshops!

Where do you go to be creative?

Whether it be in my studio space or right on the kitchen table, my home is my creative sanctuary.

What inspires your products and/or your process?

Everything! I'm inspired by people, stories, photographs, travel, even food! I try to incorporate non-traditional items into my designs to help tell a story. Sometimes I use edible elements in my floral designs, or interesting glass scraps in my terrariums. I think I continue to do what I do because of the people. They want to see what I can do and they believe in my work. I can't really ask for much more than that!

When and why did you become an artisan? / How did you get into this business?

I would say I have always been a designer. I've dabbled in many mediums growing up, from painting to card making, jewelry and even edible arrangements. I've had many jobs and have been inspired by each of them in different ways but they always failed to keep me interested. I wanted to create! I started making floral & plant designs for family, friends, employers, and just for fun. Once people started asking me if I'd do small parties or if I sold my succulent designs and I decided to at least just start an Instagram page where I could document my creations. It sort of took off from there! I started spreading the word with friends & social media and in came dozens of orders for custom succulent designs, wedding inquiries, and so many other fun opportunities. Through this business, I continue to surpass my own creative and personal expectations while finding zero lack of inspiration in this blooming creative community that we call home. I don't think that cville BLOOMS could have started in any other place in the world.

What are you working on right now?

I have actually been spending a lot of time in the office to prepare for the upcoming busy season. Meeting with brides, writing proposals, workshop planning, that sort of stuff. Along with some long-term business planning.

What piece of jewelry can you not leave the house without?

These things never come off: my late grandmother's gold wedding band. It's simple with a bit of sparkle. And also my staple studs from Elaine B. They're just perfect.

Playful Patterns | Spring Sunshiny Style

Linnea White

MG_0476.jpg

In case you didn't already know by now, we love mixing patterns, and love helping other gals find playful ways to mix patterns. Playful patterns for sunshiny Spring days make the heart sore and beckons in the warmer weather. Because when there's still an early Spring chill in the air, just wear the sunshine!

This outfit began with the burst of yellow in the Postmark blouse from Anthropologie. The buttercup color is one of the many vibrant hues in this season's Pantone Color Report, and brings so much cheer to any outfit. The vibrant colors in the tropical print pants were the perfect match for this boxy, bold top, slimming at the ankle for a lengthening effect. The matching yellow band in the straw hat was too perfect to pass up, making this one darling Spring look to hit the town for just about any outing.

The stunning geometric necklace by one of our newest local artisans in the shop, Little Paper Crane, added the perfect eclectic touch to this whimsical look. And to add a little pop of color to the lip, I grabbed Kitsune Closet's newest creation - a bright, pigmented lip gloss, coming soon to the shop!

On Linnea: Postmark (Anthropologie) top, size XS, $22 / I Love Sadie tropical print pants, size M, $12 / Chinese Laundry white cork wedges, size 8, $20 / Soprattutto Italian made straw hat, $48 Local Artisan Pieces: Little Paper Crane shield necklace, $30 / Kitsune’s Closet lip gloss in Fiesta, coming soon to the shop!
