Lady on the Town: Vibrant Lilly Pulitzer Style

Linnea White

This outfit is vivaciously va-va-voom, the epitome of vibrant Lilly Pulitzer style. I felt like a L A D Y in it. A lady on some street in a coastal Italian town  - not just 1st Street in Downtown Cville - although I really like that street, too. This is my Sex and the City moment, and I hope I made Carrie proud.

"Anything is possible with sunshine and a little pink." - Lilly Pulitzer

Attention Lilly lovers: A whole selection of Lilly dresses came in last week, and this one called to me, saying, "Linnea, you don't normally gravitate towards pink, but this will make you look like a Barbie doll, so you should totally try it on for the blog." And I did. And I did feel like a human Barbie, but in a really good way. Like I said, I've never been much of a pink girl, but this dress made me rethink some things.

"Despite the forecast, live like it's SPRING." - Lilly Pulitzer

Lilly knows what's up. I never knew she was so quotable. Way to go, Lilly. Keep doing you.

"Being happy never goes out of a style." - Lilly Pulitzer

You know what makes me happy? The fact that this Vespa was serendipitously placed when we went outside for the shoot, and it matched the dress. I mean, WHAT THE WHAT. Praise be to GAWD. All I could have asked for to make it complete is just to be literally transported to an Italian coastal town. That would be nice. But this little slice of heaven in Charlottesville will do for now.

How to Wear Leather Shorts Like a Rockstar

Linnea White

"Seeing double double, Double Vision." These leather shorts have me channeling my inner rockstar. (Thanks, Foreigner, for everything.) And now I'm talking a bit about how to wear leather shorts, because this outfit is just one of the endless ways you can wear this statement item.

The How To: Do You

Try dressing them down with a white t-shirt and a jean jacket, or glam it up with sky high heels and a sleek blouse. Wear them in the Summer with sandals and a slinky tank top, or wear them in the Winter with tights, booties, and a chunky sweater. (I wasn't kidding, the options are endless.) Sure, I could show you a bunch of photos of how to wear them for style inspo, but that's just more of the same. You wear them YOUR way, with your personal style, your beautiful booty, and your confidence.

I recently watched the documentary Iris on Netflix, and fell deep in love with this style icon. There is much to learn from this woman, and this documentary, about personal style and how to shop like a pro. But perhaps most importantly, I learned about the lifelong journey of style. The more you discover who you are, the more you discover your personal style. I may have never had silver hair a few years ago, or thought twice about it, but here I am, and I feel more like myself than ever. Whether you're wearing a t-shirt and jeans or leather shorts and a vivaciously vibrant blazer, it's all about how you wear the clothes, not the other way around. Confidence, ladies. It goes a long way.

"There's no how-to road map to style. It's about self-expression, and, above all, attitude." - Iris Apfel

Utilitarian Chic: On Trend Meets Timeless Fashion

Linnea White

One of the Spring 2017 fashion trends to look out for, utilitarian chic is a play on tailored classics and sporty proportions. For a little #throwbackthursday fashion, I styled a timeless-meets-trendy outfit that had me channeling my inner Marilyn or Audrey in these sunnies.

This outfit is such a throw back (#TBT), I can't even handle. I felt like a mid-century babe in this outfit, from the coiffed curls to the utilitarian pencil skirt and feminine blouse. Like a bird on a wire, I felt airy and dainty, spreading my wings, strolling on my tippy toes; and like a total bad ass babe, I felt bossy and confident, rocking those shades like there was paparazzi around the corner.

Even the makeup plays up the updated 1950's style, from the hair style to the bold brow and bright lipstick, taking this trend from sporty to feminine, functional to fashionable. I opted for the Be Smoaked fuchsia lipstick, locally made by Kitsune’s Closet, as a subtle nod to Miss Felicity Smoake (Arrow fans, anyone??), another blonde bombshell. And how fun is the subtle lilac hue to the new hair in this look? I can't get enough of this darling makeover.

Keys to Wearing the Utilitarian Chic Trend

The utilitarian chic trend is incredibly versatile, and so easy to personalize to your style. From urban street to workwear chic, this trend is something any gal can pull off.

Here are a few key tips to keep in mind when wearing the utilitarian chic trend:

  • Balance oversized proportions with tailored pieces. Complement a sporty, masculine piece with a feminine, straight silhouette, like a pencil skirt or shift dress, or a lighter, airy fabric.
  • Embrace girly accents, like delicate jewelry or French-knotted scarves.
  • Pick pieces in dark, muted tones - military green, olive green, khaki, black, grey, white, brown, navy. Play with prints and solids, interplaying subtle details for a cohesive look.
  • Try a jumpsuit!
  • When in doubt: wear a white shirt. From a basic tee to a button up blouse, the white shirt is a simple way to play with this trend, pairing it with a simple skirt or pants, a parka or jacket, and a silk scarf (for a start!).
  • Finishing touches are important, so choose footwear that completes the look. For a more utilitarian, sporty look, go with heavy boots or sneakers. For a more chic, feminine look, opt for a shoe with a heel or sleek silhouette.
