How to Style a Vintage Dress: Shop Girl Style

Linnea White

This is my unicorn dress. Isn't it magical? A few weeks ago, the shop hosted an Earth Day pop-up shop with Two Scoops Vintage, and I found some amazing vintage pieces - including this dress and umbrella. Naturally, we took to the streets on the rainy day for a little shoot to show how to style a vintage dress.

Styling vintage should be fun - taking pieces from another time, another life, and translating them for a modern context. When it comes to vintage dresses, you can play up the retro vibes in the styling, or you can make it more modern by deconstructing the look and adding contemporary pieces - especially in the accessories.

When I found this incredible dress, it fit like a glove, and I couldn't get over the bright colors with my white hair. Unicorn status. I paired the dress with two current trends I was already wearing that day in the shop - my new-to-me white sneakers and J. Crew pom earrings. I almost tried a different belt/scarf combo with the dress to give it a more modern edge, but ended up going with the original belt to play up the retro vibes of this vintage look.

And to quote one of my favorite movies of all time, Singing in the Rain...

"Kathy: This California dew's a little heavier than usual tonight...

Don: Oh really? From where I stand, the sun is shining all over the place..."

Cue the song and dance!

P.S. This photo shoot is one of my favorite shoots Tristan has ever done. That jumping picture was one take, and he nailed it. I love when I get to be a dancer again on shoots! I hope it brings you as much joy as it did when I first saw that picture!

What do you think, darlings? How do you like to rock vintage pieces?

Mother-Daughter Style for Mother's Day

Linnea White

"Empowered women empower women." I am deeply passionate about this - it is a mantra in my life, for my shop, for how I see and interact with other women. And it's also an anthem for Mother's Day. Because who taught us more about confidence, beauty, grace, style, and passion than our very own momma? And today, it's all about loving on my momma in this special Mother-Daughter style post, featuring my gorgeous momma.

Behind the Mother-Daughter Style

I'm not gonna lie. She didn't want to do this. Unlike her ENFP youngest daughter who rather enjoys style shoots and being in front of the camera (that would be me), she is not someone who enjoys being in front of the camera. But I made her do it. I guess pouting still works, even at 28!

Styling my mom for this shoot was my first priority, and I had so much fun doing it. I wanted her to feel beautiful in what she was wearing, and comfortable in it, too.

My mom is Super Mom. She homeschooled all four of us kids growing up, while working part-time. Once we were either out of the nest or in high school, she went into education and began a career working for Special Education Pre-School students in Virginia Beach City Schools. (Like I said, she's Super Mom.) She's also been an avid runner, something she picked up because her children drove her out the door and onto the streets with pitchforks. Just kidding. But she did start running after starting a family (a.k.a. having multiple children) for some much needed private time. And now, several Boston Marathons later, she's the freaking Energizer Bunny. I have a dream to run a marathon with my mom one day...

But I'll keep dreaming for now, and get back to the styling!

I styled her outfit first, since she was really what it was all about. Then I worked on finding an outfit that would compliment her own. And these dresses ended up pairing perfectly together, anchored together with navy, and both shifty in style. And I loved finding jewelry she would love, and that naturally already went with her style (like those amazing bracelets she's been wearing for as long as I can remember).

I was so happy she loved her outfit - so much so that she bought the dress, boots, and necklace! I'd say that was some successful styling.

I Love You, Mom

Mom, it was an honor to style you. Thanks for getting in front of the camera with me. Thank you for supporting me endlessly, loving me deeply and honestly, and for always, always being there for me - for a long talk on the phone, for a prayer request, for a good cry, for a good belly laugh, for a good glass of wine, for a home-baked sweet-tooth fix. You'll always be Super Mom in my eyes. Happy Mother's Day!

How does your mom inspire & empower you, darling?

Off the Shoulder Dress: Foxfield Ready

Linnea White

And we're off to the r-r-races again! The 40th running of The Foxfield Races is this Saturday, and we styled this off the shoulder dress to get Miss Foxy Field ready for the races - in chic Virginia style.

The Foxfield Races are an annual tradition in the Charlottesville and University of Virginia community. And what better way to get ready for the races than shopping locally for this local event?!

Some years it's rainy and overcast for the big day of races, and other years it's hot and humid. This year looks like it will be more along the lines of the latter, with a high of 91 and a sunny forecast. So don't forget your sunblock and your sunhat, ladies!

An easy, breezy dress is perfect of the races, and so are practical shoes. These white sandals are perfect for those sunny Summer days ahead, and ideal for romping around in the grass during the races. As simple as the silhouette of this dress may seem, the vibrant color and lace detail is a fun, flirty nod to the University's orange and blue school colors.

Add a little nod to the Virginia landscape and all the Virginia love with this hand engraved "Virginia" pendant necklace. Support local, support handmade, shop local, and shop consignment, Virginia darlings!

What are you wearing to the races, darlings?! Comment and let us know!

P.S. If you can name the movie that song is from, you win a million Monopoly dollars and a lifelong friendship with Linnea.

Shop Girl Style: The Everyday Jumpsuit

Linnea White

I've been talking about my shop girl style lately, because I'm basically a living, breathing walking and talking version of Darling. I love to wear my #darlingfinds, and not only shop (almost) solely at the shop, but I also regularly consign clothing from my closet - in with the new and out with the no-longer-wearables-or-want-t0-wearables. And right now, I'm obsessed with the everyday jumpsuit.

Even though this jumpsuit isn't from the shop (cue shock and horror!), when I wore it the first time at the shop one Saturday, I had over 20 people ask me about it. I think J. Crew owes me a gift card or something, because I can guarantee I got them a few sales on this bad boy from wearing it around my shop.

In addition to my jumpsuit obsession (I can't stop, won't stop), I have a Lotta's addiction, which we've touched on before. They're my go-to shop girl shoes, and this pair is probably my most loved pair - a.k.a. very, very worn. But I love these clogs, and wear them with a wild variety of outfits, including jumpsuits. Always jumpsuits.

And when a jumpsuit just isn't enough fun for one day, add a pair of pom earrings - maybe my favorite trend this season. Why? Because they are so joyful, and literally make any outfit a party.

So get yourself some party pants and party earrings, ladies. Because everyday pieces should be all the way fun.

Shop Girl Style: Evolving Style & Rotating Closet

Linnea White

When you get an amazing jacket for $4, your life changes forever. Okay, maybe not your WHOLE life, but for that moment, you're pretty proud of yourself. At least if you're a consignment shopper like this shop girl. Since becoming the owner of a consignment shop, my personal style has evolved - constantly and cyclically. My combined passion for sustainable fashion and affordable style breeds a healthy (I think) obsession with an evolving style & rotating closet kinda life.

Over the past year alone, my personal style has evolved, transformed, and, almost weekly, rotated. I dress by mood most days, and I go through phases with certain colors, silhouettes, or clothing items. I've also had a considerable body transformation over the past two years that's allowed me to really sweep my closet of ill-fitting garments I no longer want to wear or can't wear anymore.

Through my style evolution, one thing is a constant - and that's comfort. I have to be comfortable at the shop, working long 8-10 hour days, and on my feet most of the time. That's where my Lotta's come in. This ain't no sponsored post. This is the real deal love for an item of clothing that changed your life, and that's my clogs. Two years ago when I bought the store, I bought two pairs of Lotta clogs, and they have been my staple shop girl shoe. Who knew a wooden clog could be so comfortable?!

But comfort doesn't mean sacrificing style, and I swear my hair transformation this year has emboldened me to be more eclectic than I think I've ever been. Learning to be smart with proportions and color palettes, textures and patterns, has been an adventure for me. And I hope to keep improving and learning so I can become the stylist I dream of being not just for myself, but for all the darlings out there.
