National Ice Cream Day: Retro Style

Linnea White

I love ice cream. A lot. And I don't need a national holiday like National Ice Cream Day (July 16, everyone) to eat ice cream, but I absolutely will use the important holiday as an excuse to style another outfit featuring amazing #darlingfinds. This retro style inspiration is perfect for a Sunday afternoon eating ice cream, right?

Call it the new pink in my white hair, or the fact that this Summer heat has me going a little cray, but this outfit inspiration was pretty much a shout out to the bombshells of the 40's and 50's. I can only dream of having the charisma and style of icons like Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, but I'll keep dreaming and styling in their honor.

This vintage bag started the retro outfit inspiration. And these gingham high-waisted pants were perfect for a little classic white button up tied at the waist. Add a pair of clogs or mules for a classic retro edge, a hot pink lip (locally made by Kitsune's Closet), and whimsical pinwheel earrings locally made by Emily Warden Designs, and this outfit is ready to hit the town - (extremely melted) ice cream in hand.

Special shout out to Chap's Ice Cream for the yummy treat, and cute backdrop. And props to Davines deep conditioner and the ladies of The Honeycomb for this new pink hair.

Rompin' Around: First Day of Summer Edition

Linnea White

If you know me, you know one of my favorite things is rompin' around. And it's a plus if a cute romper is involved, like this vintage number from #darlingcville.

It's Summer Solstice, the First Day of Summer, and this outfit is a ray of sunshine. It embodies all the carefree, joyful, adventurous spirit of Summer in one look. It's flirty and fun, and ready to take on all the frolicking Summer has in store.

Girl Boss Moment: Vote for Darling

Linnea White

This is my Girl Boss Moment. It's the final week of voting for the Best of C-VILLE, and Darling is up for THREE categories this year - Consignment Store, Female-owned Business, and Place for a Dress. And, call it wearing-your-confidence-until-your-feel-it, I decided to own my boss-ness by wearing it in this Shop Girl Style shoot.

Even saying that - "own my boss-ness" - has such an odd sound to me. Some days, I still can't believe I actually am a Girl Boss, that I own my own shop, that I am living this life (somebody pinch me). And some days, I still doubt that I belong among the ranks of Boss Babes in Cville and beyond. Doubt can be crippling... if you let it.

"Don't compare your hustle to their highlight reel." This is a quote from the Girl Boss herself, Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal and author of the book #Girlboss. And it's something every female entrepreneur out there needs to remember - doubt and comparison are traps; don't fall for them. Affirmations, encouragement, selflessness, humility, vulnerability, women-empowering-women - that's where your focus should be. Change your perspective, darlings. It may seem like a silly thing, but I've started a collection of "boss" shirts to wear the confidence in a weird and wonderful way when I need to push the doubt away.

What does it mean to be a 'Girl Boss'?

"A Girl Boss is someone who has big dreams and is willing to work hard for them. So being a Girl Boss is really about being the boss of your own life. You don't have to be the boss of anyone else to be a Girl Boss." - Sophia Amoruso interview via Elle

Girl Boss Moment | Photo by Tristan Williams

To me, being a Girl Boss has been a journey of taking risks, trusting in God in BIG ways, stewarding the vision well, taking baby steps (going low and slow), failing graciously and learning from it, and being okay with being vulnerable about this #ladybosslife. Sharing the journey, sharing the dream, sharing the real talk with those who are cheering you on in the sidelines, with those who get it - that part keeps you grounded.

For a moment, I laughed sitting in that throne, and said to Tristan, "I am so far outside of my comfort zone, and I love it." I meant for the shoot, for owning my boss-ness in such a blatant way. But really, what I realized I meant was this entire lady boss life has be out of my comfort zone, that I've been pushed and stretched in ways I never imagined I could be - and I've been made better by the challenge. Being a Girl Boss really means having the ability to motivate yourself, to not give up when it gets tough (cuz that's every day), and to keep doing the work. Because it is worth it. 100%.

I'm grateful to say that this has been a season of affirmation for me, for the shop. I've been the sole owner of Darling for almost a year now, and being recognized on the Best of C-VILLE ballot for "Female-owned Business" is still surreal. I am honored. I've also seen the business grow in big and exciting ways this year so far, and the affirmations of friends, fellow boss babes, and customers has been the wind in my sails. So a big, heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to all of my cheerleaders, near and far. You keep me going when my t-shirts aren't enough.

Summer Style Inspo: Brights & Basics

Linnea White

This outfit is all about the summer style inspo: brights & basics. Earlier this week, we talked about Summer neutrals and lightweight fabrics for the hotter weather. Today, it's all about mixing those basics and neutrals with those prints and brights to keep your wardrobe fresh all Summer long. So, cover your bases, darlings, and get mix-and-match crazy this Summer.

The Brights

Expect to see yellow and pink everywhere this Summer. Solids, brights, florals, patterns, you name it. They're even calling it "millennial pink," like, huh? And neon is always in, especially when you're tan, because you will feel Brazilian AF.

The Basics

From basic, neutral-hued tops to pants to shoes to bags - these are your Summer essentials. From black to tan to bright white or cream, get your basics ready for monochromatic fierceness or mix-and-matching heaven (which is basically where this outfit took us).

You can't go wrong with Birkenstocks in the Summer. They're basically THE sandal for Summer. Rock them in classic black or brown, or go for a bolder statement with metallics or bright white. And you'll be surprised by the amount of ways they can be worn - even with a sexy pencil skirt outfit.

P.S. Funny story about this outfit. The day after we did the photo shoot, Jess from the salon across the street came in and said, "I saw you in that green skirt outfit yesterday. I want the whole thing." So she proceeded to buy the top and the skirt! Definitely pays to parade around Downtown Charlottesville in these outfits - it's walking sales (literally).

Summer Neutrals for Rising Temps

Linnea White

The temps are rising, the fabrics are changing, and the Spring flowers are making way for the lush greenery of Summer. Today, we're talking about Summer neutrals for rising temps, and lighter fabrics for those humid Virginia days ahead.

For this look, we went for The Hip Gardener - which is totally a modern silhouette for the Summer. The clean lines of this dress and the neutral hues were such a good match for the fiber tassel necklace by local artisan Pan&Tea. What's even more rad is how well the earrings by Free Range & Feral matched the necklace, bringing this outfit to freakishly amazing status.

How to Wear Neutrals in Summer

Neutrals are important to a year round wardrobe because... they're neutral. No rocket science here. Neutrals are for mixing and matching with textures, patterns, and colors, and with each other. Stocking your closet with a few key neutral pieces will give you exponentially more styling options.

Go for tonal textures like eyelet or crochet details. Look for khakis, creams, bright whites, blushes, browns, blacks, and greys. Bright whites and sandy tones for Summer keep an outfit fresh and weather appropriate. And mixing textured neutrals to create a monotone look like this one is Hip Gardener approved.

Summer Fabrics

Linen is the dreamiest of fabrics for Summer - next to cotton. It's breathable and light, sweat-forgiving and non-clingy, and totes chic. This linen dress by The Podolls features a crochet (sheer) front for extra-breathability. But with the perfect lightweight slip underneath, like the Dosa cotton dress, it's the perfect modern frock for the Summer days ahead, easily dressed up or dressed down.

And IYMI, straw accessories are the Summer essential this season - not like that's a "new" trend, but straw hats and bags are making a fierce statement in the style world right now. This one is from last Summer, and one of Linnea's favorite #darlingfinds to date.

Summer style is taking Darling by storm, with new Summer arrivals weekly in the shop!

How do you transition from Spring to Summer, darlings? Is it colors or fabrics - or both?
