Cozy in Cashmere

Linnea White

Some days (mostly Monday's), it's all about cozy. And when a cashmere sweater, velvet pants, suede booties, and leather tote bag collide in one affordable, secondhand outfit, the wardrobe and the wallet can sing some praises.

This look is all about lush, cozy closet staples, like cashmere, suede, and leather, mixed in with some current trends, like oversized sweaters and velvet everything. Shopping consignment is a great way to find designer pieces, or just really great quality fabrics, for a whole lot less. When this vintage Nordstrom cashmere sweater came in to the shop in mint condition, I knew it had to be styled. Paired with an effortless pair of AG Jeans velvet pants and suede booties, this look was ready for the Fall leaves covered streets.

And don't forget your locally-made accessories, because supporting handmade is even cooler than shopping consignment. Or at least equally cool. The simply garnet + gold triangle studs by Emily Warden Designs are the perfect compliment to the effortless chic of this ensemble. Add an everyday geo cuff set by Free Range and Feral and the jewelry is done.

One of our newest Darling Artisans, Brother John Leather, makes some incredible handout, handsewn leather goods, like this leather tote bag - the perfect everyday, carry-all tote. We filled the bag with his leather wallet, leather journal, and leather clutch for all the leather goodness. What else would you put in your amazing leather bag but more leather?

National Ice Cream Day: Retro Style

Linnea White

I love ice cream. A lot. And I don't need a national holiday like National Ice Cream Day (July 16, everyone) to eat ice cream, but I absolutely will use the important holiday as an excuse to style another outfit featuring amazing #darlingfinds. This retro style inspiration is perfect for a Sunday afternoon eating ice cream, right?

Call it the new pink in my white hair, or the fact that this Summer heat has me going a little cray, but this outfit inspiration was pretty much a shout out to the bombshells of the 40's and 50's. I can only dream of having the charisma and style of icons like Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly, but I'll keep dreaming and styling in their honor.

This vintage bag started the retro outfit inspiration. And these gingham high-waisted pants were perfect for a little classic white button up tied at the waist. Add a pair of clogs or mules for a classic retro edge, a hot pink lip (locally made by Kitsune's Closet), and whimsical pinwheel earrings locally made by Emily Warden Designs, and this outfit is ready to hit the town - (extremely melted) ice cream in hand.

Special shout out to Chap's Ice Cream for the yummy treat, and cute backdrop. And props to Davines deep conditioner and the ladies of The Honeycomb for this new pink hair.

Girl Boss Moment: Vote for Darling

Linnea White

This is my Girl Boss Moment. It's the final week of voting for the Best of C-VILLE, and Darling is up for THREE categories this year - Consignment Store, Female-owned Business, and Place for a Dress. And, call it wearing-your-confidence-until-your-feel-it, I decided to own my boss-ness by wearing it in this Shop Girl Style shoot.

Even saying that - "own my boss-ness" - has such an odd sound to me. Some days, I still can't believe I actually am a Girl Boss, that I own my own shop, that I am living this life (somebody pinch me). And some days, I still doubt that I belong among the ranks of Boss Babes in Cville and beyond. Doubt can be crippling... if you let it.

"Don't compare your hustle to their highlight reel." This is a quote from the Girl Boss herself, Sophia Amoruso, founder of Nasty Gal and author of the book #Girlboss. And it's something every female entrepreneur out there needs to remember - doubt and comparison are traps; don't fall for them. Affirmations, encouragement, selflessness, humility, vulnerability, women-empowering-women - that's where your focus should be. Change your perspective, darlings. It may seem like a silly thing, but I've started a collection of "boss" shirts to wear the confidence in a weird and wonderful way when I need to push the doubt away.

What does it mean to be a 'Girl Boss'?

"A Girl Boss is someone who has big dreams and is willing to work hard for them. So being a Girl Boss is really about being the boss of your own life. You don't have to be the boss of anyone else to be a Girl Boss." - Sophia Amoruso interview via Elle

Girl Boss Moment | Photo by Tristan Williams

To me, being a Girl Boss has been a journey of taking risks, trusting in God in BIG ways, stewarding the vision well, taking baby steps (going low and slow), failing graciously and learning from it, and being okay with being vulnerable about this #ladybosslife. Sharing the journey, sharing the dream, sharing the real talk with those who are cheering you on in the sidelines, with those who get it - that part keeps you grounded.

For a moment, I laughed sitting in that throne, and said to Tristan, "I am so far outside of my comfort zone, and I love it." I meant for the shoot, for owning my boss-ness in such a blatant way. But really, what I realized I meant was this entire lady boss life has be out of my comfort zone, that I've been pushed and stretched in ways I never imagined I could be - and I've been made better by the challenge. Being a Girl Boss really means having the ability to motivate yourself, to not give up when it gets tough (cuz that's every day), and to keep doing the work. Because it is worth it. 100%.

I'm grateful to say that this has been a season of affirmation for me, for the shop. I've been the sole owner of Darling for almost a year now, and being recognized on the Best of C-VILLE ballot for "Female-owned Business" is still surreal. I am honored. I've also seen the business grow in big and exciting ways this year so far, and the affirmations of friends, fellow boss babes, and customers has been the wind in my sails. So a big, heartfelt THANK YOU goes out to all of my cheerleaders, near and far. You keep me going when my t-shirts aren't enough.

How to Style a Vintage Dress: Shop Girl Style

Linnea White

This is my unicorn dress. Isn't it magical? A few weeks ago, the shop hosted an Earth Day pop-up shop with Two Scoops Vintage, and I found some amazing vintage pieces - including this dress and umbrella. Naturally, we took to the streets on the rainy day for a little shoot to show how to style a vintage dress.

Styling vintage should be fun - taking pieces from another time, another life, and translating them for a modern context. When it comes to vintage dresses, you can play up the retro vibes in the styling, or you can make it more modern by deconstructing the look and adding contemporary pieces - especially in the accessories.

When I found this incredible dress, it fit like a glove, and I couldn't get over the bright colors with my white hair. Unicorn status. I paired the dress with two current trends I was already wearing that day in the shop - my new-to-me white sneakers and J. Crew pom earrings. I almost tried a different belt/scarf combo with the dress to give it a more modern edge, but ended up going with the original belt to play up the retro vibes of this vintage look.

And to quote one of my favorite movies of all time, Singing in the Rain...

"Kathy: This California dew's a little heavier than usual tonight...

Don: Oh really? From where I stand, the sun is shining all over the place..."

Cue the song and dance!

P.S. This photo shoot is one of my favorite shoots Tristan has ever done. That jumping picture was one take, and he nailed it. I love when I get to be a dancer again on shoots! I hope it brings you as much joy as it did when I first saw that picture!

What do you think, darlings? How do you like to rock vintage pieces?

Fitness Friday: Barre Strong, Rain or Shine

Linnea White

Don't let a little rainy day get in the way of your play, darlings! For a little Fitness Friday inspo, barre teacher Linnea came out to play in the rain for a little activewear inspiration - barre strong style. Because living a healthy, active lifestyle should be FUN!

We've talked activewear style on the blog before (here and here), showcasing the budget-friendly activewear pieces from the shop that make you look GOOD from the gym to the street. I can personally attest to the fact that I get a lot of lululemon from the shop, keeping my active lifestyle on fleek without breaking the bank.

As many of you darlings know, I teach barre at a local studio called bcore methods in the IX building. So basically, that means I own 500 pairs of leggings. And that ain't a lifestyle I can afford - unless it's secondhand! Lucky for me, there's always a selection of activewear goodies in the shop to choose from. So no excuses, darlings! Hit the studio, hit the gym, hit the streets in your activewear - rain or shine!

If you live in Charlottesville and want to come take one of my barre classes, post a comment below and I'll send you a special promo code for class discounts!
